MGIMS Finds a Place in the Top 25 Medical Schools in India

on Monday, 18 June 2012
in News

The seventh Outlook magazine and Marketing and Development Research Associates (MDRA) survey ranked MGIMS as the 21st best medical school in the country. In its 25 June issue- available online- Outlook published the list of best medical schools in the country.

The rankings were based on five-point assessment (selection process, academic excellence, personality development and exposure, infrastructure and PG selection and employment). MGIMS received a total of 632 of 1000 points. Compared to 2011 (17th rank), this year MGIMS has slipped down the ladder.

Does the lower rank adversely reflect the quality of teaching, healthcare, research and extra-curricular activities MGIMS is associated with? Be assured, it doesn't. For, three big ones- CMC, Vellore; GMC, Mumbai and MAMC, Delhi did not participate in the 2011 opinion poll - these schools did not send their data to Outlook and, therefore, were " not ranked" when Outlook ranked  the medical schools in 2011. This year, these schools  predictably occupied the first seven slots. In Maharashtra, only AFMC, Pune; GMC, Mumbai; GS Medical College, Mumbai and BJ Medical College, Pune are ahead of MGIMS. Second, several unique features of MGIMS – community based health services, rural postings and community based medical education- did not form a part of questionnaire and overall assessment.

MGIMS has shown that even in resource limited setting, a medical school can deliver high- quality education, offer affordable healthcare and generate research that impacts healthcare. And surely, it won’t rest on its laurels.

in News

Rhinosinusitis is a common disease- it affects approximately 1 in 10 adults, worldwide.

On 31 March 2012, otorhinolaryngology surgeons and practitioners gathered at MGIMS to discuss issues related to diagnosis, classification, and management of adults with acute and chronic rhinosinusitis. The participants in the day long CME identified several forms of rhinosinusitis: acute viral and bacterial, chronic with and without nasal polyposis, and allergic fungal RS. Several diagnostic tests such as cultures and computed tomography, treatment options such as intranasal steroids, use and misuse of antibiotics and anti-fungal drugs were also discussed.

The CME, organized by the department of Otorhinolaryngology, MGIMS was aimed at sharing information on diagnosis and management of sinus infections, especially fungal rhinosinusitis, an infection immunosuppressed patients are susceptible to. Close to150 delegates from Vidarbha attended this activity.

In the inauguration session, Dr (Mrs.) P. Narang, Secretary, Kasturba Health Society; Dr BS Garg, Dean, MGIMS; Dr PS Nagpure (Organizing Chairman) and Dr MP Puttewar (Vice-Chairman) spoke on issues related to epidemiology, presentation, diagnosis and management of sinus infections.

Dr Sanjiv Golhar (Nagpur) and Dr Pushker Lele (Nashik) well-known ENT and head- neck surgeons were specially invited to lecture on functional endoscopic sinus surgery in the CME.

In the morning session, Dr Deepika Garg and Dr Atul Tayade showed how intimate knowledge and understanding of the anatomy of the lateral nasal wall and the sinuses, in conjunction with a careful preoperative review of CT scans are paramount in the safe and complete performance of endoscopic sinus surgery. Dr MP Puttewar explained how fungi invade and destroy sinuses in patients with impaired immunity and Dr Vijayshree Deotale showed how to distinguish viral, bacterial and fungal rhinosinusitis from each other and how to choose appropriate chemotherapy for each of them. Finally Dr Pushker Lele described how rhinology and sinus surgery have undergone an incredible expansion since the discourses of Messerklinger and Wigand in the late 1970. He gave a guided tour of functional endoscopic sinus surgery in his presentation.

The second session comprised of three presentations: preventing and treating complications of endoscopy surgery (Dr Sanjiv Golhar), surgical management of fungal rhinosinusitis (Dr Pushkar Lele) and medical therapy of fungal rhinosinusitis (Dr Vishal Tyagi). The speakers explained how imaging advances, increased understanding of the anatomy and the pathophysiology of chronic sinusitis, and image-guided surgery have allowed surgeons to perform more complex procedures with increased safety. Finally, Dr Amit Kaushal summed up the presentations.

The organizers also invited nursing students, medical students and residents to make posters showcasing the many faces of rhinosinusitis. These posters supplemented the rich knowledge generating during the PowerPoint presentations.

There is surely more to nose than meets the eye.
