JBTDRC and Bioinformatics Centre

The Jamnalal Bajaj Tropical Disease Research Centre (JBTDRC) is an advanced centre for Tropical Disease Research established in 1994 at MGIMS Sevagram to expand the Institute’s ongoing research programmes in tropical diseases such as filariasis and tuberculosis prevalent in this region. It is the result of sustained problem based research activity in Department of Biochemistry for more than two decades at MGIMS with support from ICMR,CSIR, DST, WHO/ TDR, INDO US-STI and DBT.

Bioinformatics Centre at Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences was established in March 1999 with support from Department of Biotechnology as a part of National Bioinformatics Network. The Centre has thrust on Medical / Health Informatics. Financial support for the Centre has been approved in 12 th Five Year plan (2012-2017).

Major activities:

Online Health Informatics Course

The Centre has launched an Online Health Informatics Course in July 2010 which provides online training to healthcare personnel and interested graduates in Science, Business Administration & Information Technology (http://www.bicjbtdrc-mgims.in/ohic). To date, 34 students from UK, Uganda, Mauritius, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia and across India have registered and 29 completed this course.


Mycobacterial proteases, Mycobacterium tuberculosis proteome comparison and Human papillomavirus proteome databases software are developed and published in collaboration with ACTREC, Mumbai


Computational approach to understand the mechanism of action of INH followed by wet lab study in MTB cell culture

TB proteome mutation analysis in different clinical strains to understand mechanism of drug resistance in tuberculosis

Exploration of novel inhibitors against HPV through virtual screening and structural & functional characterization of HPV strains

Curriculum based training and research program in Biotechnology & Bioinformatics and provides research platform to the aspirants in these disciplines under DBT’s studentship and traineeship programs

Web Portals Developed

MGIMS-JBTDRC Arogya Web Portal has been launched which presents progress being made in holistic healthcare and research in lifestyle diseases by Indian Institutions for awareness, interaction and advancement in holistic therapy and research (http://bicjbtdrc-mgims.in/arogya-webportal/) in India at one platform for benefit of medical practitioners and general public MGIMS-JBTDRC Health Update is quarterly updated portal that provides information on emerging infectious diseases (http://www.jbtdrc.org/Health-Update/)

Workshops & Training courses

Centre organizes National level workshops / seminars / symposiums / training courses on Medical Informatics, Biomedical Communication and applications based Bioinformatics Technology. To date, 17 such events have been organized

SEVAMED Publication (http://www.bicjbtdrc-mgims.in/sevamed/)

Centre started publication of SEVAMED, a Quarterly Update on Infectious Disease Research and Lifestyle Diseases in 2000. In addition to giving selected references and abstracts in hard copy ‘SEVAMED’ is now available online as e-journal (http://www.bicjbtdrc-mgims.in/sevamed/) with complete bibliography and link to abstracts for easy retrieval with interactive web pages, beneficial to the researchers, medical practitioners and teachers

Arogyadham e-Newsletter

Importance of Yoga way of living as healthy lifestyle is being well emphasized for control of lifestyle diseases. UNO has declared June 21st as International Yoga Day and Arogyadham e-Newsletter is being published for promotion of healthy lifestyle with tips for healthy living
