Poonam Verma Shivkumar

Dr Poonam V. Shivkumar is an MGIMS alumnus: she obtained MBBS (1986) and MD (1990) from MGIMS. During her residency in the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, she was Dr S Chhabra’s mentee. She did a postgraduate diploma in sexually and reproductive medicine from Uppsala University, Sweden (2000) and also did a course on Educational Science for health professionals at Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), Puducherry. She also did advanced training in Obstetric HDU/ICU from Fundacion, Columbia and received Clinical Skills Trainer’s training for EmOC from CMC, Vellore. She is a PhD guide in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology

Core member of PPH working group, FIGO, and Ex-President at SWOGS, Dr Poonam V. Shivkumar has been a Principal Investigator of the following research studies: E – Partography by Jiv Daya Foundation, USA, Stillbirths and Pre viable Birth Defect Project by WHO SEARO, and Low-cost salivary progesterone for predicting preterm births by All Children Thriving, Grand Challenges and Bill Melinda Gates Foundation. Dr Poonam heads PPTCT (Prevention of Parent to Child Transmission of HIV / AIDS and VCTC) and EmOC (Emergency Obstetric care). She has also been a Co-Investigator for projects: Hypertensive Pregnancy in the community by ICMR, Nonsurgical contraception by Oregon University USA, PPH Bundle project by MGH Harvard USA. She is a Principal Investigator for PI for MOLI, A PLUS & BLOCKAPPS AI.

Dr Poonam is a TAG member at Indian Clinical Epidemiology Network (INCLEN), and a resource person at Biomedical research in HIV by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). She is a National resource person and expert for developing National guidelines development in Maternal Health for Govt of India and Govt of Maharashtra, Dr Poonam is a nodal officer for Facility-Based Maternal Death Review (FBMDR) Committee. She is also a member of the core committee for MCH Diploma at IGNOU She is a Contributor to GOI tool kit and clinical skills lab manual.

Dr Poonam is a recipient of Doctor’s award for the management of Anemia and has received a Special certificate for the EmOC project from the government of Maharashtra. Her other awards and accolades include: Best Human Service Award by CAD Pulgaon, Best Doctor Award by Lion’s club, Women of the year for community services by Mahakali Sanstha Wardha, and Best Health service provider by Wardha District, Government of Maharashtra.

Dr Poonam has chaired and given several orations, guest lectures, and paper presentations at many international and national conferences like IMA, FOGSI, AMOGS, NOGS, GCC at Srilanka, China, Thailand, Finland, Kenya, London UK, Boston and Fort Lauderdale, Florida USA, Cali, Colombia.

Dr Poonam has published 78 articles and 8 chapters in various national and international journals; she reviews manuscripts for journals and is frequently chosen as a national faculty in regional and national conferences.

Dr Poonam V Shivkumar served the institution as the Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology from 2008 for 15 years. Director Professor and Unit chief, Dr Poonam has taken charge as Medical Superintendent of Kasturba Hospital, Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences Sevagram Wardha Maharashtra.
