Modern Operation Theatre Complex inaugurated at Kasturba Hospital

Modern Operation Theatre Complex inaugurated at Kasturba Hospital

The new Operation Theatre (OT) complex at Kasturba Hospital, Sevagram, which houses ten state-of-the-art Operation Theatres, an Intensive Care Unit and  a preoperative assessment unit with ten beds each; two recovery rooms and a medical store was inaugurated on February 28 by the President of Kasturba Health Society, Mr Dhirubhai Mehta.

Mr PL Tapdiya, trustee, Kasturba Health Society; Dr BS Garg, Secretary, Kasturba Health Society; Dr KR Patond, Dean, MGIMS and Dr SP Kalantri, Medical Superintendent, Kasturba Hospital, Sevagram were present at the inauguration ceremony. The entire staff of the operation theatre and faculty from surgical and Anaesthesiology departments also attended the function.

The new OT complex—built over 15,000 square feet—and equipped with modern equipment is an MGIMS initiative to offer safe and effective surgery to patients with a wide spectrum of diseases. Each modular OT is equipped with laminar airflow systems, ceiling-mounted pendants, and antistatic and antibacterial flooring. Medical equipment, monitoring systems, and operating microscopes in the operating rooms match the best in the country. The LED surgical ceiling lights with cameras and state-of-the-art operating tables ensure that the surgeons operate in an environment that would significantly improve the outcome of the operations. The complex also provides enough space for the patient relatives to wait while their loved ones are being operated.

Dr Ajay Shukla, the head of the Ophthalmology department and Chargé d’affaires of the project said that the new complex will radically enhance the quality of service to the patients. “The well-designed operating rooms,” he said, “shall improve the safety, speed and efficiency of the surgery.” Dr Sucheta Tidke, head of the department of Anaesthesiology said that four operation theatres will be dedicated to cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, joint replacement surgery and Oncosurgery.

Speaking of the necessity to continuously upgrade the hospital, Mr Dhirubhai Mehta said that the Kasturba Hospital is undergoing major modernization works to enable the institution to respond more effectively to the challenging demands of the healthcare. “Our well-trained anesthesiologists and surgeons should be able to make the best use of the infrastructure and the equipment and should be able to address the needs of our patients requiring advanced surgery at an affordable cost,” he added.
