Workshop on Cadaveric Knee Dissection and Arthroscopy

An update and hands on training workshop on “Cadaveric Knee dissection and Arthroscopy”was held in Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Sevagram on Sunday 5th February 2017. The workshop was jointly organised by Anatomy, Orthopaedics & Radiodiagnosis departmentsof MGIMS and SICOT India Foundation. Maharashtra Medical Council, Mumbai had accredited the workshop and granted credit hours for delegates and faculty.Inaugural function and scientific talks on Basics of knee were held in Anatomy lecture hall. Dissection hall of Department of Anatomy was the venue for the Scientific talks of workshop and Wet Lab (knee dissection by specialist) and Dry model based Arthroscopy sessions.

The inauguration of workshop was done in hands of Secretary of Kasturba Health Society, Dr B S Garg, as Chief Guest, Dr K R Patond, Dean of MGIMS, as Guest of Honour and Dr S P Kalantri, Medical Superintendent of Kasturba Hosapital, as Guest of Honour. DrArun Pawade graced the occasion as Observer from MMC. Around 90 delegates attended the workshop as Post Graduate students and faculty of different Medical colleges of Wardha and Vidarbha region.

Earlier Dr Patond welcomed the delegates of the workshop and Dr M R Shende, Organising Chairperson of Workshop, presented the theme of workshop. Speaking on this occasion Dr Garg appreciated the commitment of three departments in Organising a Workshop on Sunday and stated this to be a pioneer effort in institute for setting up a trend of collaborative approach for updating the knowledge and providing an integrated learning experience. Dr Garg also felicitated Dr Vaibhav Bagaria, SICOT faculty and Guest faculty for workshop, with a memento. He also felicitated Dr Prashant Parate, Arthroscopist & Visting faculty at MGIMS, with a memento. Dr C M Badole, Professor-Head dept of Orthopaedics and Organising Secretary of the workshop, proposed vote of thanks. He, on behalf of organizers, also stated this to be the first workshop of its kind at MGIMS using a method of Cadaveric dissection and expressed a hope that more such workshops would be held in future.

Scientific talks by faculty comprised of ‘Basics of Structure & Supports of knee’ by Dr A M Tarnekar, Professor of Anatomy; ‘Nerves and Vessels around knee’ by Dr M R Shende, Org. Chairperson of workshop & Professor-Head, dept of Anatomy; ‘MRI-Anatomy of knee’ by Dr Atul Tayade, Jt. Org Secretary & Professor-Head dept of Radiodiagnosis; ‘Common Pathology in MRI Knee’ by Dr Saurabh Patil, Asst Professor in Radiodiagnosis and Surgical Approaches to the knee joint by Dr C M Badole.

The Vaibhav Bagaria demonstrated the surgical approaches to the knee and Graft harvesting methods in Cadaveric knee dissection while video camera projected the live dissection on screen. Delegates were also given opportunities to interact during dissection. He also expressed his views that Anatomy department can develop “Cadaver Lab” by acquiring the facility of suitable pretreatment & storage of cadavers @ -200C for a near life like feel of tissues so that more such hands on training sessions can be carried out on different regions of the body for budding surgeons.

Later Dr G Chintawar, Asst Prof. Orthopaedics, explained the basics of Arthroscopy set up and positioning of patient. Dr Prashant Parate then explained about the portal placement and triangularisation method in knee arthroscopy and conducted a hands-on arthroscopic training session of meniscal repair.

At last, the vote of thanks was proposed by Dr Pradeep Bokariya, Asst Professor, department of Anatomy. The workshop concluded with Valedictory and Hi-tea at 5.30 pm.

Dr Shweta Talhar (Landge) carried out the proceedings while Dr Kiran Vandile and Dr Vandana Wankhede along with other teaching staff, post graduate students & non teaching staff of the departments of Anatomy, Radiology & Orthopaedics, extended their valuable support during conduction of sessions. Mr Ramesh Khazawane, Mr Satish Shingare, Mrs Chhaya Chauhan and Mr Kavinesan helped in P-A system, photography, decoration and technical assistance respectively.
