On the 16th of February, the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (MGIMS) held its annual graduation ceremony, celebrating the accomplishments of 100 graduating students of the class of 2013.
MGIMS was particularly honored to have its own and one of the most distinguished alumnus as the chief guest of this year’s graduation ceremony. Dr. Ashutosh Raghuvanshi, the newly appointed CEO of Fortis Healthcare along with Shri Dhirubhai Mehta (President, Kasturba Health Society), Dr BS Garg (Secretary, Kasturba Health Society respectively), Dr N Gangane (Dean, MGIMS), Dr SP Kalantri (Medical Superintendent), faculty, students, families and staff assembled in the auditorium of the institute to award the degree certificates to the MGIMS class of 2013.
In his welcoming address, Dean Dr Gangane congratulated the graduating students for the hard work they had put up during their course of studies. He called the batch special for having graduated in the golden jubilee year of the institute and also for having the final inspirational words from one of their own alumni.
Shri Dhirubhai Mehta, in his presidential speech, vouched that MGIMS graduates have a set of values and beliefs that will allow them to continue their quest for lifelong learning and distinguish themselves in their chosen paths. “The great healing traditions of institutions like MGIMS are playing a huge role in the healthcare delivery in India” quoted Shri Mehta from Healers Or Predators? Healthcare Corruption in India, a book that carries a foreword by the Nobel laureate and noted economist Amartya Sen. He bade them farewell only to welcome them back.
Dr Raghuvanshi awarded the degree certificates to the class of 2013 and wished the graduates all the best in their future endeavors. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Raghuvanshi reminded the graduates to live the values and principles that the institute passed on to them: commitment, compassion, and cognizance. “Healthcare is transforming”, he said, guiding the students to stay abreast with the technology. “With the advent of Artificial Intelligence and support healthcare devices, the dynamics of healthcare shall change forever”, he strongly suggested. He also acknowledged, Dr (Mrs) Narang, Dr VK Mehta and Dr UN Jajoo for shaping his career. He also assured his alma mater that he would explore possibilities of collaboration for healthcare management.
The class of 2013 also swore to the Hippocratic Oath attributed to the ancient Greek physician Hippocrates before their peers, family, friends, and mentors. Dr. SP Kalantri administered them the famous oath. The atmosphere was charged with emotions and excitement as the students donning graduation regalia recited the ethical code—adopted as a guide to conduct by the medical profession in the graduation ceremonies of medical schools, worldwide. “The oath is not the rite of passage, nor a ritual but a strong reminder that the modern medicine is not limited to technology and clinical knowledge but signifies humanity, compassion, and empathy at the point of care”, reminded Dr Kalantri.
Dr Satish Kumar, Officer- In- Charge Students’ Council acknowledged the enormous work done by the Bioethics Unit made by a bunch of students from the graduating batch and felicitated them for the same.
Dr Sarang Bombatkar, a graduating student from 2013 batch aptly shared his intimate moments with the institute and its people. “Graduating from MGIMS gives me a huge sense of pride and me along with all my batchmates shall always abide by the values we have imbibed here”, he assured.
The ceremony closed with Dr Anupama Gupta, In-Charge Cultural Programme who urged the new doctors to make an impact of their own. She also generously thanked the dignitaries and everyone involved for their contributions in making the event a grand success.
