Call for Nominations for International Gandhi Award for Leprosy 2015

Dear Madam/Sir

Gandhiji had a life-long interest in leprosy and a deep compassion for leprosy sufferers. Besides serving leprosy affected persons, Gandhiji rote and spoke about leprosy extensively with a scientific basis. He accorded leprosy work an important place in his famous 18-point Constructive Programme.

Gandhi Memorial Leprosy Foundation was established in 1951 to perpetuate the memory of Mahatma Gandhi and to extend and give concrete shape to his abiding interest in leprosy work. Pioneering work was done to evolve and implement strategies suitable to tackle both rural and urban leprosy problems in India.

To commemorate Mahatma Gandhi's service and scientific approach towards leprosy, Gandhi Memorial Leprosy Foundation instituted an award for presentation to individuals/institutions making outstanding contribution in leprosy field resulting in the amelioration of the suffering of leprosy patients and enabling them to lead normal life. The name of the award is INTERNATIONAL GANDHI AWARD. 

PERIODICITY:

The award is presented once in two years and consists of Rs 2.0 lacs cash, a medallion & citation. The last time it was given in 2013.

NUMBER OF AWARDS

Two awards are presented either to individual or institution fulfilling the eligibility criteria for the Award.

ELIGIBILITY:

The Award will be given. to a leprosy worker/leprosy institution having worked for a period of not less than ten years and having made significant contribution to improve the quality of life of leprosy affected persons and helping them to lead normal and useful life in the society.

The Award is open to medical, paramedical or non-medical and social workers in leprosy field. The candidate has to be nominated by a person of prominence in the field of leprosy. Post-humus nominations will not be accepted.

In-service staff & Committee members of GMLF as well as those who retired within a period of 5 years prior to the year of the Award are not eligible for nomination for this Award.

SELECTION PROCEDURE

The nominations received by Gandhi Memorial Leprosy Foundation are referred to members of an International Panel of Experts nominated by GMLF Committee. The members of the panel will not nominate any individual/institution/or any member of the panel, for this Award.

The Award Committee, under the Chairmanship of the Hon'ble Vice-President of India, meets to consider and finalise the names of two Awardees.

REQUIREMENTS:

The nominating agency/person must provide complete bio-data of the nominee with detail description of anti-leprosy work done by nominated person or institution. The significant contribution to leprosy work should be supported with documentary evidence/publications.

It should include confirmation from the nominee that she/he or the institution is   willing to accept the award if selected.

The last date of nominations is 31st July 2015.
