MGIMS secures first position in National Orthopedics quiz

MGIMS secures first position in National Orthopedics quiz

Mr Sujay Srivastava and Mr Prakhar Jyoti (2016 batch undergraduates) of Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Sevagram secured the first position in a National Level Undergraduate Orthopaedics Quiz held at Seth GS Medical College and KEM Hospital, Mumbai on 12th March 2020.  Seth GS Medical College (Mumbai) and BJ Medical College (Pune) secured second and third position respectively. Other teams from GMC Chandrapur, GMC Ahmedabad, Kashibai Navle Medical College Pune, GMC Hubali, Terna Medical College Mumbai, LTTMC Sion Mumbai, HSBT Medical College Mumbai participated.

10 teams from across the country participated in the quiz competition and of six of them were selected after the preliminary elimination round. The quiz consisted of 13 rounds and the participants were tested for their basic understanding of the subject and their clinical skills. Dr Arvind Arora (an acclaimed Orthopedician whose book is widely used by students for NEET preparations) conducted the quiz. Knowledge of orthopaedic cast, splint, brace, traction, implants; identification of fracture eponyms; findings of fracture X-Ray, tumour X-Ray etc were judged from different rounds.

MGIMS won the quiz and was declared winners of the 2nd National level Undergraduate Orthopaedics quiz. Dr SK Srivastava (Professor and Head of Orthopaedics, KEM Hospital Mumbai) honoured the students with trophy and certificates. Venkata Sainath and Cheryl Mankar (MGIMS Undergraduates, Batch 2016) emerged as winners among the audience during the audience round of the quiz and received gifts for correct answers.

Dr CM Badole (Head of Orthopaedics, MGIMS) congratulated the winners and said, “It is indeed a proud moment for the entire Orthopaedics department to witness our students emerging as national winners. Such competitions boost the confidence of budding doctors and give them an insight into the subject”. He acknowledged the contribution of department faculty and institute management for their encouragement and support.

“During the last round, our team gave a tough competition to Seth GS Medical College (Mumbai) team for the top spot,” shared Dr Girish Mote (Assistant Professor of Orthopaedics, MGIMS) who helped the team prepare for the quiz and accompanied them. “The participants were selected on the basis of screening test carried out by the department of Orthopaedics of MGIMS and evening classes were taken to help them prepare for the quiz”, he informed.
