On 29 September 2022, the Department of Medicine at Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Sevagram, organized a walkathon to celebrate the World Heart Day. ‘Use Heart for Every Heart’ was the theme of the event. A total of 50 participants started form the heart of the hospital premises at 5:30 in the morning. The participants crossed the Sevagram Chowk and walked up to Karanji Bhoge and walked back on the same route, making a total of 5km before returning back to the institute.
Senior faculty members Dr AP Jain (Emeritus Professor of Medicine), Dr UN Jajoo (Emeritus Professor of Medicine), Dr SP Kalantri (Medical Superintendent and Professor of Medicine), Dr Manish Jain (Head of Paediatrics), Dr Dilip Gupta (Head of Surgery), Dr Anupama Gupta (Head of Pathology), Dr Subodh Gupta (Head of Community Medicine) along with other faculty and residents participated in the walkathon. The participants were served with refreshments upon their return.
“There hasn’t been much activity since Covid. We want to instil enthusiasm among our co-workers and connect together beyond our work schedule”, said Dr Bharati Taksande (Professor of Medicine, MGIMS) who played an instrumental role in organising the walkathon. “During the walkathon, the participants walked in small groups and were escorted with a volunteer to ensure the safety of the morning walkers”, she informed.
“The walkathon is a symbolic tribute to heathy India. We are celebrating this day to remind each one of us to take care of all the hearts around us”, said Dr Sumedh Jajoo (Associate Professor of Medicine, MGIMS)
“A healthy heart is a gift for life. Achieving a work-life balance and resorting to healthy life style by exercising regularly, eating a balanced diet and meditation is a must for a hearty life”, said Dr Jyoti Jain (Head of Medicine, MGIMS). She also thanked Dean and Secretary for their support in organising the event.
