VAMMCON - the 4th Annual Conference of Vidarbha Association of Medical Microbiologist held

The Department of Microbiology at Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences hosted a three-days conference - ‘VAMMCON – 2023’- the 4th Annual Conference of Vidarbha Association of Medical Microbiologist (VAMM) conference - from 24th February to 26th February 2023 in the new auditorium of the campus. The theme of the cme-cum-conference was "Evolving Medical Microbiology - New Horizons". Total 135 delegates from across the country participated in the conference which involved various learning and interactive sessions on Medical Microbiology, Mycology, and Genomics.

During the inauguration function on 25 Feb 2023, Dr Priya Abraham (Ex-Director of National Institute of Virology) was the chief guest and Dr Arti Kapil (President, Indian Association of Medical Microbiologists) was the guest of honor for the occasion. Dr Rajesh Karyakarte (President, State Chapter of IAMM), Dr Umesh Hasani (President, VAMM), Dr Farah Mohammad (Secretary,  VAMM) Shri Dhirubhai Mehta (President, Kasturba Health Society), Shri PL Tapadia (Vice-President, Kasturba Health Society), Dr BS Garg (Secretary, Kasturba Health Society), Dr AK Shukla (Dean, MGIMS),Dr Poonam Shivkumar (Medical Superintendent, Kasturba Hospital), Dr (Mrs) P Narang (Organizing Chairperson, VAMMCON), Dr Vijayshree Khairkar (Organizing Secretary, VAMMCON), Head of Departments, faculty, residents, delegates, and staff were present during the inauguration ceremony. Other eminent guest speakers in the audience were Dr Uma Tendulkar from Mumbai, Dr Kashinath Prasad from SGPGI Lucknow, Dr Rajni Gaind ,Delhi, Dr Jayanti' Shastri, Mumbai, Dr Ayush Gupta from Bhopal. Senior microbiologists from Vidarbha like Dr Ashok Pathak, Dr S L Akulwar, Dr Sachin Deokar, Dr Meena Mishra, Dr Neena Nagdeo, Dr R Surpam and others also graced the function

In her address, Chief guest Dr Priya Abraham said, “We are in the era where the care for non-communicable diseases is becoming prominent.  Infectious diseases shall continue to evolve in both developed as well as developing countries”. She also mentioned how her team along with Dr Rajesh Karyakarte (President, State Chapter of IAMM) detected the first covid case and alerted the national authorities of the new strain.

The ceremony started with the traditional welcome of the dignitaries. Dr AK Shukla (Dean, MGIMS) welcomed the guests and delegates and reflected back upon the contribution of the Microbiology department in the last 52 years of the existence of MGIMS. Dr (Mrs) P Narang introduced all eminent guests and speakers who were a part of the various sessions in the three-days conference. “Microbiology has undergone significant transformation in recent years. New pathogens and challenges are constantly evolving. With recent advances in the field of microbiology diagnostics, clinicians shall now be able to offer patient-tailored treatment”, informed Dr Narang while introducing the theme of the CME.

Shri Dhirubhai Mehta (President, Kasturba Health Society), released the souvenir and congratulated the association for organising the CME. “New organism emerges every two years. The evolutionary growth of the field has to be a continuous effort”, Shri Mehta said.

Dr Arti Kapil (President, Indian Association of Medical Microbiologists) appreciated the efforts taken by MGIMS and Vidharbha Association of Microbiologists in organising such revolutionary CMEs. Dr Umesh Hasani (President, VAMM) encouraged students to participate in research and publish their work. Dr Vijayshree Khairkar (Organizing Secretary, VAMMCON) acknowledged the contribution of everyone involved in making the conference a huge success. The function ended with national anthem.
