National Symposium on Healthy Yoga Lifestyle

National Symposium on ‘Healthy  Yoga Lifestyle – for Prevention of Lifestyle Diseases’ &  CME on ‘Role of Yoga, Nature, Nutrition & Meditation in Promotion of Holistic Health’ was organized at Arogyadham, JB Tropical Disease Research Centre, Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Sevagram during September  10-11, 2015, supported by KHS, DST, ICMR, MUHS, AYUSH & MCI.

The Symposium and CME was designed with the purpose to highlight Yoga & Naturopathy as drugless system of medicine and as a Science of Holistic Living for promotion of positive health and prevention of non-communicable / lifestyle diseases in young & old and to sensitize and motivate doctors in modern medicine to introduce healthy yoga lifestyle as intervention in management of Lifestyle diseases. Efforts were made to disseminate the scientific and technical advances in Yoga, Naturopathy and Meditation by practicing experts and researchers.

 About 107 delegates and 23 Guest speakers and Yoga & Naturopathy experts, hundreds of medical students attended from all over India have exchanged their views and knowledge through presentations and discussions.

On September 10th, CME sessions held with informal inauguration in afternoon at schedule hours. Interesting talks were delivered by eminent speakers in CME.  Dr. O.P. Gupta, Senior Consultant & Emeritus Professor, Dept. of Medicine, MGIMS   and Dr. Kumudini Borole, Professor, Sinhgad Dental College & Hospital, Pune chaired the session. Dr. Mukund Baheti, Consultant Neurologist, Nagpur delivered lecture on 'Fasting – Integrating Ancient Wisdom and Modern Insights for Positive Health'; Dr. Saraah Chimthanawala, Dr. Sara's Vision, Holistic Health Care Centre, Nagpur spoke on 'Tune to 8 to 12 HZ- Alpha Brain Frequency'; Dr. J.V. Dixit, Prof & Head, PSM Dept, GMC, Latur delivered talk on 'Simple Method to Prevent Obesity & Diabetes'; Shri. Subodh Tiwari, Jt. Director-Admin, Kaivalyadhama Yoga Institute, Lonavala talked on ‘The Therapeutic Principles of Yoga-Classical and Scientific View Point’; Dr. R.V. Nisal, Director, Nisargopchar Ashram, Uruli-Kanchan delivered talk on ‘Naturopathy in Management of Lifestyle Related Disorders’.  

At 5.30 pm formal Inaugural function was held in the Sarojini Naidu Hall. Dr. Ramesh Gautam,  National General Secretary,  Arogya Bharati, Nagpur was the Chief Guest and Dr. Vijendra Chauhan, Advisor (Academic), Swami Rama Himalayan University, Dehradun and Dr. P. Kaliraj, Emeritus Professor of Biotechnology &  Former Vice- Chancellor, Anna University, Chennai were the Guests of Honour. Shri Dhiru S. Mehta, President, KHS presided over the function. Amongst   other dignitaries on the dais  who graced  the occasion was Dr. B.S. Garg, Secretary, KHS; Dr. K.R. Patond, Dean, MGIMS; Dr. B. C. Harinath, Organizing Chairman and Director, JBTDRC & Coordinator, Arogyadham & BIC and Organizing Secretary  Dr. Praveen Khairkar. The program started with Puja and garlanding  of portraits of Bapuji & Ba and Dr. Sushila Nayar. Dr. B. C. Harinath welcomed the audience and gave introduction, about the theme of Symposium and CME and requested the yoga experts to come out with the protocol of therapy at what level it can be primary intervention and when it can be complementary which is the need of hour at the special place Sevagram and  for the welfare of Universe. Program ended with vote of thanks by  Dr. Praveen Khairkar.

On second day 11th September, 1st session was chaired by Dr. P. Kaliraj & Dr. P.B. Behere. Talks on ‘Holistic Health, the Future of Modern Medicine’; ‘Yoga life style for prevention of Cardiovascular Disease’ and ‘Accept Stress, to be Healthy’ were delivered by Dr. Vijendra Chauhan, Dehradun; Padma Shri Dr. S.C. Manchanda, Senior Consultant Cardiologist, Sir Gangaram Hospital, New Delhi and Dr. Babu Joseph, Director, NINCY, Kochi respectively. 2nd session was chaired by Dr. Indira Kharat, Founder Vice President, Global Compassion, Inc., USA and Dr. Niraj Shende, Asst Manager, R&D, Serum Institute of India Ltd, Pune. Talks on ‘Breath Awareness’; ‘Origin and Application of Yoga Nidra’ and ‘Need for Compassion in Society’ were delivered by Dr. Sangeeta Nehra, Director, AYUSH Haryana, Panchkula, Haryana; Dr. Kamakhya Kumar, Chief Coordinator, Center of CAM & Assoc. Prof., Dept of Yoga & Health, DSVV, Haridwar and Dr. Indira Kharat respectively.

The same day Oral Presentations delivered by 2 participants. Presentations on ‘Yoga – a helping hand for diabetes prevention’ & ‘Healthy Yoga Lifestyle for Promotion of Holistic Health and Prevention of Disease’ were delivered by Dr. Sneha Borkar, PG Scholar, R.A. Podar Ayurvedic Medical college, Mumbai & Dr. Vikas Kapoor, Ayurveda Physician, Haridwar respectively. This Presentation session was chaired by Dr. Indira Kharat. 19 participants had presented their poster in the poster session. Three best posters were awarded with prize and  certificates. On day 2 post lunch session was chaired by Dr. G.B.K.S. Prasad, Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences, Jiwaji University, Gwalior. Talks on 'Reversal of Coronary Heart Disease by Yoga & Lifestyle Modification' by Yogi Jayadevan, Yoga Bhavan, Ollur, Thrissur and 'Yoga-for Prevention of Lifestyle Diseases' by Dr. Satish D. Pathak, Assoc. Prof. & Research Officer, Scientific Research Development, Kaivalyadhama Yoga Institute, Lonavala were delivered.

In the Panel Discussion on 'Yoga for Promotion of Holistic Health', Dr. Sangeeta Nehra, Panchkula, Haryana was the Moderator and Yogi Jayadevan, Thrissur; Dr. R.V. Nisal, Uruli-Kanchan,;  Dr. O.P. Gupta, Sevagram; Dr. Subodh Tiwari, Lonavala and  Dr. Ramesh Gautam,  Nagpur were the panelists. Various points were discussed about importance and necessity of  Yoga  for promotion of Holistic Health. Delegates were also actively participated and gave their suggestions on the various aspects of Yoga for promotion of holistic health. 

At Concluding function Dr. Ramesh Gautam, Nagpur; Shri. Dhiru S. Mehata, President, KHS; Dr. K.R. Patond, Dean, MGIMS were present.  Amongst   other dignitaries  on the dais  who graced  the occasion was Dr. B. C. Harinath, Organizing Chairman and Dr. Praveen Khairkar, Organizing Secretary. Dr. B.C. Harinath briefed about essence of the symposium. Appreciative feedback was given by some members from audience.

Along with different interesting intellectual sessions, nutritious natural dishes were served such as Fresh juices in morning, raw and steamed sprouts, Healthy herbal  tea etc. Delegates enjoyed the dishes.

On 10th evening in the cultural program Dr. Biswajit Dash, Panchakarma Consultant & Classical Odissi Dancer, Rourkela performed on the theme 'Yoga in Odissi Dance'  and  students of Sakshi Dance Academy, Wardha performed classical dances. Field trip was arranged for speakers and participants to  the special historical places Gandhi Ashram (Bapu Kutir), Vinoba Bhave Ashram at Paonar etc.
