2nd October: Department of Ophthalmology organized a one day Eye camp in the premises of Kasturba Hospital. People from the surrounding villages and towns of Wardha district as well as far off places like Adilabad, Rajura, Sirpur, Bhandara, Jalgaon, Warangal, Motala, Chandrapur, Korpana, Kalamb, Bhadrawati, Nagpur, Warora, Anandwan, Buldhana, Pandharkawada, Chandur Railway, Ner, Ballarshah, Amrawati Kaghaz Nagar, Yavatmal and Baitul availed the services this year.
The camp was held in the Eye OPD of the hospital. A total of 526 patients were registered and examined for ocular disorders. 353 patients have been operated for mainly Cataract with modern IOL implantation. Other surgeries also include Glaucoma, Sac and lid surgeries of various types. The facilities provided in the camp was totally free. The patients were not charged anything for the surgery, medicines or glasses.
Overwhelmed with the service and efforts of the department, Shashikala, a 48 years old female patient shared her story- ”I was actively working as a maid and was capable of earning daily wages to support my family of four until a year back when I lost the vision of both the eyes and became completely blind. My son brought me to the camp as I could neither see anything nor identify people.”
Like most of the people who had surgery in the camp, Shashikala also got one of the best results after the surgery. Her vision improved drastically and she requested for the other eye surgery as well. She was successfully treated with normal vision in both eyes. She was ecstatic having got her vision back and thanked the entire team when she was discharged from the ward. She could function independently now and resume back to earning her livelihood. Life would be so much easier for her now.
Dr AK Shukla, Head of Department of Ophthalmology, MGIMS, said, “This Gandhi-Jayanti-Camp has been a regular event of the hospital right from its inception. We strive hard to provide help to the innocent and poor people of the area and shall continue to provide such services in future too” .
