Kasturba Hospital’s MCH Wing marked World Breastfeeding Week, observed annually from August 1-7, with a series of events aimed at raising awareness and promoting the vital importance of breastfeeding for both infants and mothers. The theme for this year, "Closing the gap: Breastfeeding support for all," highlights the ongoing efforts by UNICEF and WHO to enhance breastfeeding support as a key measure to reduce health disparities and uphold the rights of mothers and infants to survive and thrive.
The week-long program at Kasturba Hospital was organized under the guidance of Medical Superintendent Dr. Poonam Varma and Matron Mrs. Neeta Shetye. The activities included educational talks, performances, and interactive sessions, all designed to empower women with knowledge and encourage the practice of breastfeeding.
Dr. Shila Shelke, Associate Professor of OBGY, delivered an insightful talk on the importance of breastfeeding, emphasizing the need for exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of an infant's life and continued breastfeeding until two years of age. Assistant Matron Mrs. Kiran Meshram shared her heartfelt poem titled "स्तनपान एक वरदान" (Breastfeeding: A Blessing), while Assistant Matron Mrs. Mangala Thakare highlighted the numerous benefits of breastfeeding for both mother and child.
A skit performed by the Nursing staff effectively raised awareness among mothers and their families about the significance of breastfeeding. The skit, along with demonstrations by NME staff and learners, also addressed common myths and presented various breastfeeding positions. In addition, the Nursing staff provided health education to antenatal and postnatal mothers on the initiation and continuation of breastfeeding, stressing its importance and the potential health risks associated with not breastfeeding.
To further promote and support breastfeeding, posters were displayed and slogans were raised throughout the week. The event saw active participation from all Ward Incharges, Staff Nurses, Gyn OPD Staff, ANMs, NME staff, and learners from the MCH Wing. The program concluded with a strong resolution to continue spreading the message of breastfeeding's benefits throughout the year, ensuring ongoing support for mothers and their infants.
