National Pharmacovigilance Week Celebrated

National Pharmacovigilance Week Celebrated

The Department of Pharmacology at MGIMS, Sevagram, participated in the celebration of the 4th National Pharmacovigilance Week from 17th to 23rd September 2024. As a regional center for Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR) reporting, the department organized a series of activities in line with the national theme, "Building an Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR) Reporting Culture for Patient Safety." The events saw active participation from second-year MBBS and Nursing students, highlighting their enthusiasm and commitment to pharmacovigilance.

Summary of Activities:

Day 1: 17th September 2024

The week began with a public awareness lecture conducted by Dr. Leena Chimurkar, Associate Professor, Department of Pharmacology, MGIMS, Sevagram. The session, titled "Public Awareness About ADR and Reporting," was aimed at educating the general public on the importance of reporting adverse drug reactions.

Day 2: 18th September 2024

A poster competition for second-year MBBS students (batches 2022 and 2023) was organized under the guidance of Dr. Devesh Gosavi, Prof. & Head, Department of Pharmacology. The students displayed commendable creativity and understanding of ADR reporting. Their work was supported by seniors, contributing to the quality of the posters. This event was judged by Dr. Bharati Taksande, Professor of Medicine.

Day 3: 19th September 2024

A sensitization program on Pharmacovigilance was conducted for the In-charge nurses of Kasturba Hospital, Sevagram. The seminar was inaugurated by Dr. Leena Chimurkar, who provided an insightful introduction to the importance of Pharmacovigilance in enhancing patient safety. Following the introduction, Dr. Ranjana Kale, Professor, Department of Pharmacology, MGIMS Sevagram, delivered a briefing on the objectives of the event, emphasizing its significance in the healthcare landscape and the key role of nurses in the ADR reporting system. Dr. Shruti Rana, Junior Resident (1st Year), Department of Pharmacology, MGIMS Sevagram, presented a comprehensive seminar on Pharmacovigilance, sensitizing the nursing staff about its importance, reporting procedures, and the various centers involved in monitoring ADRs. She provided detailed guidelines on how to report ADRs within MGIMS, who is eligible to report, and the optimal time to do so, empowering nurses to contribute actively to patient safety initiatives.

The session was followed by an engaging presentation by Dr. Nishigandha Bangal, Junior Resident (2nd Year), Department of Pharmacology, MGIMS Sevagram, who conducted an elaborate and interactive seminar on Materiovigilance. She highlighted the significance of monitoring and reporting adverse events related to medical devices, further broadening the scope of the seminar and enhancing the participants' understanding of Pharmacovigilance and Materiovigilance.

Day 4: 20th September 2024

A poster competition was held for Nursing students at Kasturba Nursing College, Sevagram. Under the guidance of Dr. Ranjana Kale, the students showcased their understanding of ADR reporting through beautifully crafted posters.

Day 5: 21st September 2024

The highlight of the week was a street play (Nukkad Natak) performed by students from the second-year MBBS 2022 batch, with participation from a student from the 2023 batch. The play, staged in front of the Medicine Department and Registration OPD, creatively raised awareness among the general public about the importance of ADR reporting.

Day 6: 23rd September 2024

The final day featured a seminar presentation competition by second-year MBBS students from the 2022 batch. The students presented their presentations and perspectives on pharmacovigilance and ADR reporting, demonstrating their deep understanding of the subject. Programme ends with the words of appreciation for all the students by Dr. Devesh Gosavi.

The week concluded with a prize distribution ceremony where winning students were awarded trophies and certificates, while all the participants were also awarded with the certificates for their participation by faculties Dr. Devesh Gosavi, HOD of Pharmacology, Dr. Vijayashri Deotale, HOD of Microbiology, Dr. Sachin Pawar, HOD of Physiology, Dr. Ranjana Kale, Professor of Pharmacology, Dr. Abhay Deshmukh, Associate Professor of Pathology, Dr. Leena Chimurkar, Associate Professor of Pharmacology. A summary video of all the activities was shown to commemorate the eventful week.
