Dr. PRJ Gangadharam Endowment Award Conferred Upon Dr. Vijay Kumar Arora

Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (MGIMS), Sevagram, hosted the prestigious Dr. PRJ Gangadharam Award Ceremony on 31st January 2025, recognizing outstanding contributions to tuberculosis research and control. The esteemed Dr. Vijay Kumar Arora, Chairman, Tuberculosis Association of India, was conferred with this prestigious honor by Shri PL Tapadiaji (President, Kasturba Health Society) for his exemplary work in the field of tuberculosis prevention, treatment, and policy advocacy.

Dr. Arora's contributions have significantly advanced the fight against tuberculosis, aligning with national and global efforts to eliminate the disease. His leadership in public health, clinical research, and policy implementation has made a lasting impact on tuberculosis control programs in India.

The award ceremony was graced by the presence of Dr. BS Garg (Secretary, Kasturba Health Society), Dr. Poonam Shivkumar Varma (Medical Superintendent, Kasturba Hospital), Dr. P Narang (Emeritus Professor of Microbiology and Chairperson of the award committee), and Dr. Vijayshree Khairkar (Organizing Secretary and Head of the Department of Microbiology), alongside senior faculty members, heads of departments, consultants, staff, residents, and nurses.

The PRJ Gangadharam Endowment Award, named after the esteemed Dr. PRJ Gangadharam, a luminary in the field of tuberculosis, is dedicated to recognizing Indian scientists who have significantly contributed to TB control. The award aims to inspire young scientists to pursue research in the field. Dr. Vijay Kumar Arora was also honored for his dedication and remarkable contributions to TB research, receiving a citation, a certificate of honor, and a cash prize of Rs. 25,000.

Speaking at the event, Shri Tapadiya Ji remarked, “The Fight against TB is not just a medical battle but a social battle too” “His pioneering work has strengthened TB control efforts, including his contributions to leveraging artificial intelligence in diagnostics, treatment monitoring, and data analysis”, stated Dr P Narang. Dr. Vijayshree Khairkar, from the award citation read, “Dr. Arora's relentless efforts and nationwide initiatives to raise awareness and promote tuberculosis control have made him a beacon of inspiration for healthcare workers committed to eliminating TB in India. His latest initiative, launched today, is a nationwide movement, ‘Action Against Stigma,’ aimed at combating the social stigma associated with TB.”

In his acceptance speech, Dr. Vijay Kumar Arora spoke about the pathways to TB care in the elderly and the repair challenges. He emphasized adherence to medical therapy, the stigma associated with the disease, and the vulnerability of the elderly population as the major challenges in TB treatment. "At this juncture, and given the pace at which we are moving, the goal of 'End TB' remains a dream to achieve," added Dr. Arora.
