National Mid-Term CME of Social Psychiatry Highlighting Gender and Mental Health Conducted

The National Mid-Term CME of Social Psychiatry was successfully conducted at Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (MGIMS), Sevagram by the Dept. of Psychiatry under the chairmanship of Dr. Kshirod K. Mishra (HOD Psychiatry) in association with Indian Association for Social Psychiatry (IASP), focusing on the theme “Mental Health and Gender: Bridging Biological and Social Constructs.” This event funded by National Academy of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, brought together eminent psychiatrists and mental health professionals to discuss gender-related influences on mental well-being.

The CME featured a series of thought-provoking sessions, with experts addressing crucial topics such as gender-based differences in mental health, intersectionality, and the impact of societal constructs on psychiatric disorders. Inaugural function of CME was graced by the esteemed presence of Dr. B.S. Garg, Secretary Kasturba Health Society and Dr. A.K. Shukla, Dean MGIMS along with other dignitaries. IASP leadership including Dr. Debashish Basu, Dr. Nitin Gupta, Dr. Varghese Punnoose, and Dr. Vivek Agarwal, provided deep insights into gender-sensitive psychiatric care. A major highlight was the debate session on 'Gender Bias Across Occupations,' which offered contrasting perspectives on presence of gender discrimination at workplace. Additionally, Poster & paper presentations as well as a quiz for postgraduate students, ensured active participation from the attendees. The CME served as an excellent platform for academic exchange and professional networking.

The program ended with a valedictory session, where the audience were encouraged to follow gender sensitive practices in clinic as well as while teaching students. The event was widely appreciated by participants, with many calling for further initiatives on gender and mental health in future academic gatherings.
