World Health Day Observed at MGIMS

On 7 April 2025, the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (MGIMS), Sevagram, celebrated World Health Day with great enthusiasm and widespread participation. Present at the event were Dr. B S Garg (Secretary, Kasturba Health Society), Dr. A K Shukla (Dean, MGIMS), Dr. Poonam Shivkumar Varma (Medical Superintendent, Kasturba Hospital), Dr. Dhiraj Bhandari (Deputy Medical Superintendent, Kasturba Hospital), Dr. Shuchi Jain (Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology), heads of the Departments of Surgery, Anaesthesia, and Ophthalmology, the Principals of the Nursing College and School, Matron, Administrative Officers, Ward In-charges, staff nurses, and students.

This year’s theme, 'Healthy Beginnings and Healthy Futures,” was brought to life through a session held on the hospital premises, where dignitaries highlighted the significance of the day and the urgent need to address the leading causes of maternal and newborn deaths in India. Dr. B S Garg emphasized the importance of improving social determinants such as the standard of living, environmental sanitation, and community awareness to reduce maternal mortality. “We must invest in the health of mothers and newborns for the strength of our future generations”, Dr Garg added.

Dr. Poonam Shivkumar Varma introduced the theme and its relevance. “This year focuses on maternal and newborn health, and the need to end preventable maternal and newborn deaths while prioritizing women’s long-term health and well-being. Postpartum Hemorrhage (PPH), Hypertension, and Sepsis are the three major causes of maternal deaths, which can be prevented with timely intervention and awareness. Through events like these, we aim to bring these issues to the forefront.” Reaffirming the institute’s commitment to safe motherhood, Dr. Shuchi Jain stated:“No woman should die while giving birth to a baby.”

Dr. A K Shukla, reflected on the need for coordinated efforts and timely action“India bears one of the largest burdens of maternal and child mortality. As we move forward, we must strive for healthy pregnancies, positive outcomes, and improved health for women—not just in India, but all over the world.”

As part of the observance, a Walkathon was flagged off from the Accident and Emergency Department by Dr. B S Garg, Dr. A K Shukla, and Dr. Poonam Shivkumar Varma. Faculty, staff, nursing students, and medical students joined the rally with spirited participation. More than 300 participants walked up to Sevagram Chowk, carrying placards and raising slogans to generate awareness about the causes and prevention of maternal and newborn mortality.

The participants were divided into four color-coded teams representing the leading causes of maternal and infant deaths: Red Team – Postpartum Hemorrhage, Brown Team – Hypertension in Pregnancy, Yellow Team – Sepsis, Purple Team – Infant Mortality. Each group raised slogans and carried messages to raise awareness and encourage timely medical care, proper antenatal checkups, and institutional deliveries.

The day’s activities reinforced MGIMS’s vision to promote holistic, preventive, and inclusive healthcare for all.
