The staff and faculty of Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (MGIMS), Kasturba Hospital, and Kasturba Health Society gathered to pay heartfelt tributes to their former President, Late Shri Dhirubhaiji Mehta, on the occasion of his Smriti Diwas. A solemn prayer and remembrance sabha were held to honor his enduring legacy and invaluable contributions to the institution.
The occasion was graced by Shri P. L. Tapadia (President, Kasturba Health Society), Dr. B. S. Garg (Secretary, Kasturba Health Society), Dr. A. K. Shukla (Dean, MGIMS), Dr. Poonam Shivkumar Varma (Medical Superintendent, Kasturba Hospital), and Dr. Ramesh Pandey and Dr. Dhiraj Bhandari (Deputy Medical Superintendents, Kasturba Hospital). Heads of departments, faculty members, staff nurses, and students also joined in large numbers to pay their respects and witness the day’s important developments. Members of Late Shri Dhirubhaiji Mehta’s family were present at the ceremony, expressing gratitude for the continued remembrance and the progressive strides the institution has taken.
Marking the occasion, a series of key inaugurations were carried out to enhance patient care and strengthen institutional infrastructure. The revamped Accident & Emergency Department now features a more structured layout with clearly demarcated zones, including a triage area for immediate assessment, resuscitation bays with advanced life-saving equipment, dedicated areas for major and minor procedures, and specialized observation and isolation rooms. “The layout has been restructured to ensure faster patient movement, reduced treatment delays, and better coordination among clinical teams,” shared Dr. Dhiraj Bhandari.
In the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, a complete gynecology endoscopy set was inaugurated, further strengthening the department’s capabilities in both diagnostic and operative procedures. “The new setup includes equipment for laparoscopy, hysteroscopy, and colposcopy—essential tools that will allow minimally invasive evaluation and treatment of various gynaecological conditions of our patients”, informed Dr Poonam Shivkumar Varma.
Other significant inaugurations included the launch of a CPR Training Program for Laypersons by the Department of Anesthesiology, aimed at equipping the community with essential life-saving skills; the inauguration of a Laser Machine for Minimally Invasive Surgeries in the Department of Surgery, enhancing surgical precision and reducing recovery times; and the installation of five new state-of-the-art dental chairs in the Department of Dentistry, increasing the capacity for consultations and treatments and ensuring more timely oral healthcare services.
“In an era where healthcare often bows to commerce, Shri Dhirubhaiji Mehta stood firm in his conviction—quality healthcare and education must remain accessible to all. Today, as we carry his legacy forward, we remain committed to dreaming bigger, doing better, and serving with the same steadfast resolve.”
