Dr Vikas Bhatia

When an MGIMS alumnus becomes the director of AIIMS, the alma mater has every reason to be proud of.

Dr. Vikas Bhatia belongs to the MGIMS class of 1981. Dr. Bhatia did his MBBS and MD in Community Medicine from MGIMS and is among the privileged few post-graduate students to acquire his degree under supervision of Hon’ble (late) Dr. Sushila Nayar, in 1989.

Dr. Bhatia is Director of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Hyderabad since May, 2021. He was the founder Dean of AIIMS Bhubaneshwar from 2012-2019. Dr Bhatia has been instrumental in commencing the OPD and tele-consultation facilities, developing 19 various departments, labs and ICUs; and executing the indoor and Covid care services at AIIMS, Hyderabad. He also executed the starting of 58 academic courses such as MBBS, MD, B.Sc & M. Sc (Nursing) & other academic activities at AIIMS, Bhubaneswar. He started a Journal as Chief Editor, “Indian Journal of Community & Family Medicine” under aegis of MoH & FW, Govt. of India from AIIMS, Bhubaneswar.

Dr. Bhatia has served in PGIMER, Chandigarh, UCMS, Delhi, and Govt. Medical College, Chandigarh where he played key role in establishing Department of Community Medicine and Urban Health Training Centre in particular. During his mission of about 3½ years as National Professional Officer in UNICEF, he made significant contribution with Govt. of Uttar Pradesh in Immunization, creating a network of Health & Nutrition Resource Centres, introducing new Vaccine of Japanese Encephalitis, SNCU, NRC and others to strengthen maternal and child health.

Dr. Bhatia has been awarded and honoured by UNICEF, MoH & FW, Govt. of India and other organizations. With over 155 publications, authoring 2 books, publishing 52 funded project reports/documents and making over 300 presentations, he has made enormous contributions in academics & public health at national and international level. He has travelled extensively in India and abroad and is fully committed in improving the health care of underprivileged community in the country. He has dedicated his work and contribution to his mentor and teacher, Badi Behen Ji, Late Dr. Sushila Nayar, as she carries her vision in reaching out to poor & enhancing academic environment in India.
