TEACHING & TRAINING

The department began to enroll students for MD program ( two students every year) in 1980 and obtained recognition from MCI in 2002. The PhD programs date back to 1984, though.

Every year we teach a batch of 65 students how the human body works. Lectures, group discussions, tutorials and seminars apart, poster presentations are key components of teaching and learning principles of physiology. We also collaborate with Anatomy and Biochemistry departments to integrate teaching. In addition, the Academy of Basic Medical Sciences (Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry) encourages students to pick up organ specific topics and present them to an audience that draws faculty from first basic sciences and undergraduate students.

RESEARCH

The department has published 79 articles and 90 presentations have been made by our faculty in national and international conferences. Over the last few years, students from first MBBS have won ICMR short term studentships and have chosen topics in basic physiology for their research projects.

ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES

We also organize CMEs, Seminars and conferences. The 45th annual conference of APPI and an international CME on Physiological basis and pharmacological therapy of hypertension was organized in December 1999. We joined hands with colleagues from the departments of Ayurveda, Biochemistry and JBTDRC to host a CME on alternative system of Medicine in February 2002. We have also begun intra-departmental quiz from 2011; the winners participate in the national Physiology quiz.

HEALTH CARE

The reproductive biology lab, set up in 1974, offers diagnostic tests for infertility and also counsels infertile couples. In 2002, we established Clinical Neurophysiology Unit that performs nerve conduction tests, EMG, and auditory and visual evoked potentials. In 2010, we launched a sleep lab that offers polysomnography. We also do spirometry and impedance cardio-vasculography.
