Sports Physiology lab at MGIMS

The department of Physiology of Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences got its state-of-the-art Sports Physiology laboratory. On 5th June 2018, Shri Dhirubhai Mehta (President, Kasturba Health Society) inaugurated the newly furbished lab in the presence Dr BS Garg (Secretary, Kasturba Health Society), Dr KR Patond (Dean, MGIMS), Dr S Chhabra (Director Professor of Gynecology), Head of departments, other faculty members, staff, paramedics and students.

“The first of its kind in central India, this Sports Physiology lab is equipped with a complete exercise physiology recording and analysis system for monitoring cardiorespiratory and metabolic function. It can thus help in assessing the Cardio-Pulmonary efficiency of sportsmen”, told Dr Ruchi Kothari, Associate Professor of Physiology and In –Charge of Sports Physiology Lab. “The system records and displays continuous real-time measurements of CO2 and O2 concentrations, airflow, temperature of respired air, as well as ECG and Heart Rate Variablility (HRV)”, she added.

“Wireless Physiological Monitoring in this lab allows to combine all the benefits of wireless technology and can wirelessly record noise -free multichannel ECG, R-R interval, Heart Rate, expansion derived Breathing Rate, Skin Temperature GSR, Oxygen saturation (SPO2), and XYZ Accelerometry data from one subject at a time which ensures freedom of movement for the subjects so that realistic human activities can be observed. This recording system is built for realistic human research with a wide range of physiological data recorded via a compact and unobtrusive sensor belt, leaving your subject free to move naturally while data streams wirelessly”, informed Dr AR Chaudhari, Head of Department of Physiology.

Dr Ruchi further explained that the initial stimulus is to assess the Physiology of the cardio vascular efficiency of athletes and other sports persons. The lab has facility to perform complete heart rate variability analysis (Time & Frequency domains analysis), ECG Analysis interpretation, PQRST amplitudes and ST elevation as well.
