MGIMS participates in the Global Fight against Antibiotic Resistance

Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Sevagram (MGIMS), Vidarbha Association of Medical Microbiologists (VAMM) and Indian Association of Medical Microbiologists (IAMM) jointly participated in Maha Marathon at Nagpur towards the cause of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Containment on 03.02.2019. Twenty four participants including medical teachers, PGs, Interns and students from Nagpur and Sevagram supported this cause. Total participation for the marathon was 5500.

AMR as per World Health Organization (WHO) is “a serious threat that is no longer a prediction for the future, it is happening right now in every region of the world and has the potential to affect anyone, of any age, in any country.” Antimicrobial Resistance develops with overuse and misuse of medicines and these medicines no longer work in people who need them for treatment of their infections. AMR is now a major threat to the humanity.

IAMM in its recently held meeting in New Delhi on 21.01.2019 pledged commitment to this cause and has already circulated a calendar of events for the year 2019. This activity at Nagpur was first of this series with great success. The message was spread to at least 2000 persons and got a huge response.

“Today, untreatable infections are the reality around the world”, said Dr P Narang, Emiritus Professor of Microbiology at MGIMS who led the campaign in Nagpur. “We’ve had some success fighting antibiotic resistance but, if we don’t all act fast together, we will see global progress quickly unravel”, she added.

Centre for One Health, Department of Microbiology at MGIMS Sevagram is also committed to the cause of AMR Containment in addition to Zoonoses and Food Safety”, informed says Dr R Narang, Professor of Microbiology at MGIMS.

Other participants were Dr Anupama Gupta, Mrs Sangeeta Narang and 16 students from Sevagram; Dr Sangeeta Khedikar, Dr Anuradha Deshmukh, Dr Neena Nagdeo from Nagpur, and Dr Rajendra Surpam from Chandrapur.
