President Kovind commemorates MGIMS' Golden Jubilee celebrations

Honorable President of India Shri Ram Nath Kovind, the First lady, Smt Savita Kovind, Governor of Maharashtra Shri C Vidyasagar Rao, Chief Minister of Maharashtra Shri Devendra Fadnavis along with an array of dignitaries joined Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences to commemorate the golden jubilee celebration of the institute.

The 40-minutes programme started with Gandhiji’s favourite bhajan Vaishnava Jan Tu, followed by the lightening of the ceremonial lamp. The dignitaries garlanded the portraits of Mahatma Gandhi, Kasturba Gandhi and institute Founder-President Dr Sushila Nayar.

President Kovind inaugurated the 750-seated auditorium by unveiling the plaque in the august presence of the dignitaries. The auditorium complex is named as the Swarna Jayanti Sabhagar complex.

Shri Dhirubhai Mehta, President Kasturba Health Society welcomed the gathering and showcased the evolution of institute over last 5 decades. Known for its quality healthcare, community-based education and adherence to Gandhian principles, Shri Dhirubhai added, “MGIMS takes every effort to sensitize the medical students to the real rural India”. “MGIMS is conscious of the fact that medical education needs to maintain the right balance in the eternal triangle of quality, quantity and equity” Shri Dhirubhai reported quoting one of the Parliament reports. To mark the momentous occasion, Shri Dhirubhai felicitated the dignitaries with their long cherished traditions of honoring the guests with sutgundi (hand-woven khadi thread), shawl and mementoes.

In his Presidential address, President Kovind foremost expressed his deep condolences for the flood victims from various parts of the country. Noting the stellar contribution of MGIMS in academic excellence and rural service, the President said, “an institution inspired by the life and teachings of Mahatma Gandhi could have only prospered in this manner”. He congratulated the entire MGIMS family for taking the rich legacy of service and social justice to greater heights.

“You are the beacon of hope for many and millions” reminded the President. Admiring the unique features of MGIMS education ecosystem, the President said, “MGIMS' village adoption schemes, community empowerment services, jowar health insurance plan and Melghat health services present a template of value-based education which many can follow”.

The president urged MGIMS to engage with WHO, harbor artificial intelligence and seek telemedicine to benchmark itself amongst the best in the world. “With a dream of New India where each one of us has a life of dignity and well-being, we the people of India count upon your compassion and healing touch”, reminded the President.

Dr Nitin Gangane, Dean, concluded the proceedings by expressing his gratitude towards the esteemed presence of the dignitaries in the celebration of the institute’s 50 glorious years. Dr Anshu, Professor of Pathology conducted the event.
