Diagnostic Cum Therapeutic Multispecialty Health Camp held at Melghat

A two-day Diagnostic cum Therapeutic multispeciality health camp was organized by Kasturba Health Society’s Dr. Sushila Nayar Multispecialty Hospital, Utawali, Dharni, Melghat, Amravati on 10th and 11th February 2023. The camp was inaugurated by the Chief guest Shri Rajkumar Patel, MLA, Dharni. Guest of Honor Mr. Prakash Ghadge (Member of Zilla Parishad, Dharni), Dr BS Garg (Secretary Kasturba Health Society), Dr AK Shukla (Dean, MGIMS), Dr. S. Chhabra (Officer on special duty) Head of Departments, faculty, residents and staff were present at the occasion. Shri Dhirubhaiji Mehta (President, Kasturba Health Society) attended the inauguration virtually.

The camp started with the traditional bhajan and the dignitaries paid their respect to the bust of Badi Behenji (Dr. Sushila Nayar -Founder President of Kasturba Health Society, Sevagram) and sought blessings of the Almighty, Ba, Bapu and Behenji. In his address, Chief guest, Shri Rajkumar Patel wished the camp a grand success, and shared his experiences of the problems faced by the local community. “It is not easy to convince people to approach healthcare when there are so many beliefs and misbeliefs prevalent in the communities”, he said.  He commended the efforts taken by the hospital in tackling healthcare and emergencies in the region. Shri Patel assured his best help in every possible way.

Dr S Chhabra welcomed everyone gathered at the occasion.  She shared glimpses of the nascent health setup at Sevagram in the early 1940s. “A small dispensary started by Gandhiji in 1942 has now developed into a 1000 bedded Kasturba Hospital attached to Mahatma Gandhi Institute Medical Sciences, Sevagram, and serves as the backbone of Dr. Sushila Nayar hospital, Utavali.  She also described how despite all odds Dr. Sushila Nayar Hospital has come into existence for the communities of the Melghat region.  She acknowledged the support of the health and administration department of Amravati. She also mentioned the support of Shri Dhirubhaiji and everyone from KHS and MGIMS, Sevagram. “Dr. Sushila Nayar Hospital is now a reasonably equipped 50 bedded hospital which caters to the needy 24x7. Our existence has created continued resource generation activities and wellness of one and all in Melghat region, with special care in 140 villages”, Dr Chhabra added. She also mentioned the various projects like training in sewing and stitching being given to girls from nearby villages, and providing support for elderlies.

Shri. Dhirubhaiji Mehta blessed the event virtually as he could not attend the function due to health reasons. He specially thanked the chief guest, and also described how Dr. Chhabra is running this hospital and also assured continued support for the services. Dr. B. S. Garg, Secretary KHS, gave his best wishes for the camp and assurance of continued support.

Mr. Prakash Ghadge congratulated the Dr Sushila Nayar Hospital team for organizing this multi-speciality camp and urged all the attendees to avail the benefits of the camp. The dignitaries declared the camp open by lighting the lamp. All the dignitaries were felicitated by giving tokens of remembrance.

The vote of thanks was given by the Dean of MGIMS, Sevagram, Dr. A. K. Shukla who thanked the chief guest, the Amravati district’s Government, and administrative and health departments for their constant support. He thanked everyone in Kasturba Health Society Sevagram, Dr. Sushila Nayar hospital, and other departments. The program ended with National Anthem. Dr.Mihir compered and conducted the inaugural program.

The inauguration event was followed by a diagnostic and therapeutic medical and surgical camp for which the team at Sushila Nayar Hospital was joined by a big multi-specialty team from MGIMS Sevagram for the next two days.

Total of 3009 patients took benefit of the camp, with multispecialty services totalling 4693, specialty-wise Ophthalmology 1330, Medicine 631, Surgery 563, Orthopaedics 473, Obstetrics and Gynaecology 339, ENT 338, Skin VD 186, Paediatrics 180, Dental 90, Psychiatry 17, and Cancer 3. Total 81 patients were operated (50 Surgery + 14 Eye + 8 ENT + 8 Gynaecology + 1 Ortho). Workup included ECG 120, X-ray 145, Blood Samples 250, and Medication was given to 2424 patients. Seven surgical cases have been supported by PMJAY and MJPJAY schemes. “Complicated cases of surgery, ENT, Orthopaedics were referred to Kasturba Hospital, Sevagram and few surgeries are scheduled to be performed at Dr. Sushila Nayar Hospital on 17th/18th/19th March 2023. All major Gynaecological cases will be operated at Dr. Sushila Nayar Hospital. The chain of camps will continue to serve the needy”, informed Dr Chhabra.
