World TB Day celebrated

On 24 March 2023, World Tuberculosis (TB) Day was celebrated at Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (MGIMS), Sevagram.  The theme for this year's World Tuberculosis Day was “Yes! We can end TB!”. Various programs conducted at MGIMS focused on sensitizing the patients about the characteristic and presentation of the disease, demythsfying myths associated with TB, and briefing the responsibilities of the patient affected with TB. On this occasion, MGIMS doctors, staff, and nurses participated in the global vision to stop the TB epidemic.

On World TB Day, several Information-Education-and-communiction (IEC) activities were conducted in MGIMS  to spread awareness regarding Tuberculosis. IEC materials on Tuberculosis Infection Prevention Control were distributed amongst the staff and patients. The IEC activities were conducted in OPDs of various departments.

MGIMS has recently collaborated with SHARE INDIA - a Scientific Industrial Research Organization (SIRO) as recognized by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. Through this collaboration, MGIMS is working for the prevention of Tuberculosis infection and disease amongst healthcare workers of the institute.

The program was initiated in the campus of General OPD and DOTS center. Dr. Asmita Rannaware (Project Coordinator, Prtham Project) handed over the IEC material to Mrs Neeta Shetye (Matron and Principal of Kasturba Nursing School). Students performed a skit on TB awareness and treatment regimen which was followed by a demonstration of hand hygiene and cough etiquettes by Sister Anita Kadam and Sister Kiran Meshram. The IEC material, received from SHARE INDIA, included posters on cough etiquette and Tuberculosis IPC strategies. The IEC materials were distributed amongst the OPD patients and departmental staff on World TB Day. To spread the message, the students of Kasturba Nursing school performed a skit related to Tuberculosis mimicking the movie characters from the Hindi feature film ‘Sholay’

Similar activities were also conducted in Medicine OPD, Mother and Child Health Wing, Trauma Centre, and Orthopedic Ward.  Interaction with the departmental staff regarding the introduction to Prtham project for the prevention of Tuberculous infection amongst healthcare workers in MGIMS was also undertaken.  The program was organized by Dr BS Garg (Secretary, Kasturba Health Society), Dr AK Shukla (Dean MGIMS), Dr. Poonam Varma Shivkumar (Medical Superintendent, Kasturba Hospital), Dr. Mrs P Narang (Emeritus Professor, Department of Microbiology) and SHARE INDIA team.
