SERVICE

The department has an emergency and accident trauma care unit, fully equipped to provide services to the rural masses. It has the facility of an ultra modern ambulance with wireless phone system to carry victims from the roadside accident site to the hospital.

All surgeries including trauma, spine, arthroplasty, arthroscopic, reconstructive and tumor surgeries are done in the Department. The Department provides super-speciality services like joint replacement, arthroscopy and spine surgery at very low costs. Implants are provided at minimum costs. Paraplegic and quadriplegic patients with traumatic spine injuries are also treated by the doctors. The Orthopedics department also runs specialty clinics in the periphery at the PHCs and Melghat. The Department also carries out reconstructive surgeries for patients of leprosy. Surgeries are conducted on disabled patients of poliomyelitis and cerebral palsy who are further rehabilitated with physiotherapy and occupational therapy. Patients requiring prosthesis and orthosis are helped by the artificial limb fitting centre and given a fresh lease of life. The Department also runs specialty clinics at PHCs and diagnostic camps at Melghat.

EDUCATION

For the teaching of the postgraduate and undergraduate students dedicated and experienced staff is available. Postgraduate academic meets are held every day and seminars, X-rays, journal reading, short case and long case discussions are done. For surgical demonstrations, the department has a video camera with the help of which interesting and rare surgeries are recorded for academic purposes. Postgraduates are exposed to super speciality work in Orthopedics. They also have a chance to attend various postgraduate instructional and teaching courses across the country.

Teaching and training is being provided to MBBS, MS, DOrtho, BSc and Diploma nursing students. Training is also provided to DNB Orthopedics, DNB rural surgery, PGDGM Community medicine postgraduates. The Department is the only department approved by MUHS for PhD Course in Orthopedics and one candidate has been registered.

RESEARCH

The Department of Orthopedics is well known for its quality research projects and presentations. At present, research is being conducted in the following areas: surgical management of distal humerus fracture and its functional outcome, epidural steroid in management of chronic low back pain, primary cemented bipolar hemiarthroplasty in unstable osteoporotic fractures of intertrochanteric femur in elderly patient, functional outcome of open reduction and internal fixation of fracture proximal humerus with proximal humerus internal locking osteosynthesis (PHILOS) plate.
